Language Experiments

Technical Problems

Java

Our experimental software requires a Java 1.4 or 1.5 to be installed on your computer. Java can be downloaded from here. Our software has been tested on the following browsers:

The software might also run with other browsers, provided that Java 1.4 or 1.5 is installed.

Some users might experience incompatibilities depending on the platform (i.e., hardware, operating system, and browser) they are using. This is due to the fact that Java is not as platform independent as it is supposed to be, and unfortunately we are unable to test our software on all possible platforms.

If you encounter problems, please report the error to our software development team.

Firewalls

For some experiments, your computer needs to establish a connection with ours (the only data we gather is the responses you type in). In these cases, the software may not work if you access the web through a firewall, depending on how the firewall is configured. If it is configured to allow outgoing connections initiated by your computer through unregistered ports, then there should be no problem.

Experiments that might lead to problems with firewalls have been marked with an icon, NoFW. If you are not sure whether you use a firewall (or how it is configured), please try the experiment anyway, and accept our apologies if there is an error.

Font Encodings

Depending on what language the experiment is in, you might need a web browser that is capable of displaying text in a language-specific font encoding. Here is an overview of the language currently supported by our experimental software:

ENEnglish: no special font encoding is required.

FRDEITESFrench, German, Italian, Spanish: For these languages, your web browser has to be capable of displaying HTML text using the ISO 8859-1 (Latin-1) encoding. Furthermore, your browser has to be capable of displaying Latin-1 text in Java using the Unicode encoding. Please check if your browser is capable of displaying Unicode: Latin-1 characters are located in section 0000-00FF of the Unicode codespace.

ELGreek: Your web browser has to be capable of displaying Greek HTML text using the ISO 8859-7 encoding. Furthermore, your browser has to be capable of displaying Greek text in Java using the Unicode encoding. Please check if your browser is capable of displaying Unicode: Greek characters are located in section 0300-03FF of the Unicode codespace.

HEHebrew: Your web browser has to be capable of displaying Hebrew HTML text using the ISO 8859-8 encoding. Furthermore, your browser has to be capable of displaying Hebrew text in Java using the Unicode encoding. Please check if your browser is capable of displaying Unicode: Hebrew characters are located in section 0500-05FF of the Unicode codespace.

RURussian: Your web browser has to be capable of displaying Cyrillic HTML text using the ISO 8859-5 encoding. Furthermore, your browser has to be capable of displaying Cyrillic text in Java using the Unicode encoding. Please check if your browser is capable of displaying Unicode: Cyrillic characters are located in section 0400-04FF of the Unicode codespace.

Reporting Errors

Please note that the software used to run these experiments is still under development, and it's possible that you may encounter problems. If so, please forgive us and let us know what happened, so we can try to track down the error.

Details of the psychologists and software engineers involved can be found in the introduction to each experiment. General technical problems with the experimental software (unrelated to specific experiments) should be reported to the WebExp Development Team.

It would be very helpful if you could include an accurate description of the problem if you report an error. Please state the platform (browser, operating system, hardware) you are using. If possible, please include the Java log of your browser, so that we can identify the error more easily.
