Language Experiments
Using the Portal
The Language Experiments
Portal is an increasingly successful gateway to psycholinguistic
experiments on the web. The aim of the site is to provide a
single entry point for a range of experiments on language; one site to
advertise, one site to find in search engines. If you would like to
add a study to our list of current studies, please see the information
and conditions below.
How the Portal Works
The Language
Experiments Portal is simply a pointer to a list of studies. The
majority of studies run so far have used WebExp software, but
there is no reason for this to be the case. The list can in principle
contain pointers to any bona fide psycholinguistic experiment running
anywhere on the web.
The pointers to working experiments are randomised every time the
index page is loaded, so that every study gets an equal chance of
appearing at the top of the list. When studies have expired, they are
removed and placed on the List of Previous
Experiments, with pointers to the email addresses of the people
responsible for the experiment. If the experiment included a prize
draw, then the winners should be published on List of Winners.
Conditions of Advertising a Study
- The only link that can be given for any study advertised
is http://www.language-experiments.org/
(possibly in conjunction with the name of the study that is given in
the list of experiments). This is to ensure that the Language Experiments
Portal remains an easy-to-find and popular site; by adhering to
this rule the general traffic to the site will be increased, and
everyone running experiments will benefit.
- Published work on the basis of experiments linked from this site
must mention that the Language Experiments
Portal was the primary link for the experiment. We also encourage
you to link your publication to our List
of Publications.
- All experimenters that use the Language Experiments
Portal have to adhere to standard ethical guidelines for the
experimentation with human subjects. These are laid down, for
instance, in the Ethical
Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct by the American Psychological Association.
- When you advertise an your experiment, please stick to standard
Internet rules
regarding advertising. In particular, you should respect the
conventions regarding posting to newsgroups or mailing lists. In other
words: please don't spam anyone
when advertising the Language Experiments
Portal.
- The maintainers of the Language Experiments
Portal (who are also the WebExp developers) maintain
the right to make arbitrary decisions regarding the advertising of
experiments. In particular, we have the right to reject a link
because:
- We do not feel that the experiment to be advertised
is compatible with the aims of the site;
- The technology used is
too restrictive, or unreliable;
- There are too many experiments
running at any given time.
How to Apply for a Link
Send email to webexp-dev@inf.ed.ac.uk
giving:
- The URL of your experiment;
- A brief description of what it is;
- A two or three-word description to be used in the list of experiments;
- How long the experiment takes to complete;
- An expiry date;
- Contact email address of the experimenter;
- Whether the experiment has particular technical requirements
above and beyond standard HTML and CGI form handling.
We will contact you as soon as possible with details of our decision,
and the link if appropriate.
We very much hope that you will consider using the Language Experiments
Portal to advertise your language experiments in the future. The
more people using the site as a launchpad, the more popular it will
become, and the more everyone looking for participants in language
experiments will benefit.
